THE MAN WITH EYES ON HIS PALMS

From young, he was always looked upon differently. His favourite comics was X Men, because he knew exactly how being ‘different’ felt like. He knew what it felt like to be a freak.

However, unlike the perfect world that Marvel created, there was no school for a boy who had an extra pair of eyes on his hands. All he could do was to wear gloves, and that still caused taunts.

As he grew older, things got worse for his hands started to have weird bumps. In a world where everyone is superficial, there was no girl who was willing to see past his physical shortcomings in order to get to know him better. At the tender age of just 18, he knew that it was pointless being a hopeless romantic.

So that’s how he spends his days now, just covering everything up when he is outside. Long sleeves shirts or tshirts, gloves. At home, when he is by himself, he can be himself, using the eyes on his palms to read. From time to time he will drink coffee. Drinking coffee seems to be the only highlight of his life.

He is still a dreamer. He dreams and longs for the day where he could be transported to the world of X-Men and be part of that crew. He dreams, dreams, dreams. And I watch, from the window directly opposite his house. But you see, although I do not have obvious physical shortcomings, I still feel like a freak and thus cannot bring myself to take that walk over to his house, knock on his door and give him that hug that is very much overdue.
