Story Inspired By Picture:
UNWANTED MEMORIES
She took out the shoe box that she had kept well hidden under her bed. It was coated with dust. She sneezed as some of the particles entered her nose. She brushed the rest of the dust away and opened the box to see photographs of a man. In all the photographs, the face of the man was scratched off.
There were some pictures of him by himself. Some of him with the rest of the family. She saw a picture of him putting his arms around two little girls. She saw another picture with the faceless man, a woman and the same two little girls. The women were smiling but she couldn’t make out the expression on the man’s face from the picture. However when she searched into her own memory box locked in her mind, she could remember his face - stern, without a smile, without any expression of emotion whatsoever. That’s how she had always remembered him. And right now, she was so tired of constantly being reminded of him.
She wasn’t stupid. She knew that getting rid of forgotten photographs would not erase him from her memory. She still felt that she had to do something though.
She looked at the last photograph that was right at the bottom of the shoe box. It was one of him sitting by himself on a chair. He was dressed for a wedding they were attending. That day was probably the last time they did anything as a family. She remembered what she was feeling as she took his picture without his knowledge. She also remembered painting the blackness to the photograph and what she felt as she was doing that.
‘All of this has to end,’ she said aloud to herself as she lit a match and watched as the fire disintegrated all the physical reminders of memories that were begging to die.
